An Introduction to Solar Electricity

The sun has been worshiped as a life-giver to our planet since ancient times. The industrial ages gave us the understanding of sunlight as an energy source. This discovery has never been more important than now as we realize that the exploitation of fossil energy sources is affecting the planet's ambient temperature.

The energy supply from the Sun is truly enormous; on average the Earth's surface receives about 1.2 x 1017 W of solar power. This means that in less than one hour enough energy is supplied to the Earth to satisfy the entire energy demand of the human population over the whole year.

The Photovoltaic cell or Solar cell is nothing new though you may have only heard of them more recently. The Photovoltaic cell was actually first discovered in 1839 and has progressed to the state of art Solar cells we now have.

Power generation by Solar cells is reliable, involves no moving parts, and the operation and maintenance costs are very low. The operation of a Solar cell system is silent and craetes no atmospheric pollution. Solar cells systems are modular and can be quickly installed. Power can be generated where it is required without the need for transmission lines. Many of these installations operate in locations where other means of electricity supply would be out of the question, providing important social benefits to rural communities throughout the world. Advances in the technologies and economies of scale have brought the cost down to levels competitive with conventional power generation.

After the initial expense of purchasing and installing your Solar cell system, all the power you generate is free with no additional cost. Depending on the size of your system, you can replace or reduce the power required from your utility company. It is also possible to connect your system to the power companies lines and feed your surplus power into their system. This way you can reduce or eliminate your power bill by gaining credit for the power you provide to the utility company.

Ultimate Home Energy Solution

The full-time off-grid home needs more charging power, a larger inverter, and often incorporates a backup generator. The Ultimate Home Energy Solution has many features to support comfortable living beyond the reach of utility lines. An 1188W solar array has lots of charge power, and is capable of delivering between 2 and 4 kWh of electricity per day in most situations. It uses the Sharp OnEnergy system, wired to an MPPT charge controller to maximize the output in all light levels. The 6000W Xantrex inverter delivers lots of power for household appliances. This model features clean sine wave power, and produces both 120 and 240 VAC, allowing things like well pumps to be installed in the system. It also has a powerful 100A/48V battery charger to quickly top up those batteries in winter. If more power is needed in the future, you can add more solar, wind power or a generator. The optional Big Red battery bank is a great choice for energy storage.
